Teach ME Outside is built off of data and findings from the 2019 and 2022 Census of Community-Based Environmental Learning in Maine. The 2022 Census of Community-Based Outdoor and Environmental Learning in Maine is a follow-up study to the 2019 Census that provides a clearer understanding of how to equitably meet the needs of learners and educators in environmental learning today and into the future.
The Census was led by Teach ME Outside and nearly doubled the response rate of the 2019 survey with 917 individual responses representing 622 schools, businesses, and organizations responding from every county in Maine.
The 2022 Census expanded to include the childcare sector and expanded question sets about climate education, equity and access to programming, and partnerships.
The Teach ME Outside initiative continues to grow from findings from the Census in response to the existing needs of the field.
The 2019 Census of Community-Based Environmental Learning in Maine is an exciting, first-of-its-kind report that documents the creative and innovative programming occurring across our state, both in-school and out-of-school, to connect youth to their environment and communities.
The Census was a joint project of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance and the Maine Environmental Education Association and involved 479 individual responses representing 434 schools and organizations responding from every county in Maine.
The report provides a comprehensive baseline understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in environmental education (both in-school and out-of-school time learning contexts) and provides a clearer understanding of how to equitably meet the needs of learners and educators, today and into the future.
